If I have an HD TV 1080i, and I buy a BluRay Disc player that is 1080p - will it produce 1080i picture? Will there be any conflict?

Also, do I need to purchase any special cables? I am giving it as a gift and I want to be sure I have everything together so it can be used right away.

yes, they can output 1080i, but that almost defeats the purpose of using blu-ray :) up scaling a regular dvd to 1080i probably looks just about as good. as far as special cables, depends on the tv. HDMI is preferred, but you can do 1080i/p on component too.

exactly, plus the ps3 is really a better bluray player then other players, and its better priced. plus it can be upgraded.

ehh, if thats the only reason, then it is retarded. It is the absolute best bluray player you can buy. Plus there's no decent games for ps3 anyways :) 360 is where its at

I didn't know that it's bluray player is superior to all others. Can you explain to me what exactly is better about it?

I was intending to buy the Sony BluRay BDP-S550 1080p Player.

Product Features

* Bonus View & BD-Live (Profile 2.0) w/1GB flash memory for local storage
* Full HD 1080/60p & 24p True Cinema Video Output
* Dolby True HD/DTS-HD decoder built-in with 7.1ch out. Quick start up mode.
* Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD bitstream out over HDMI (V1.3)
* x.v.Color for AVC-HD

I see the PlayStation 3 for $450.00 which is significantly more expensive than the Sony BluRay player. I can see it being worth it if there is a big difference in quality.

well one HUGE option is its upgradable. once you buy that sony, if they come out with a higher resolution, or better framerate, etc, etc, you will have to buy another player. the ps3, will say, there is a new update, would you like to download it? click yes, poof, your player is updated. Plus it has an 80gb hard drive, you can go on the internet if you need, and it makes a GREAT media center. So you can play all your MUSIC, MOVIES, PICTURES from your PC over the network.

PS3 is 399.99 at best buy. Plus the remote is bluetooth, so you dont have to worry about pointing it directly at the player. it will work from anywhere in the room. That is a few reasons why, if you need more, let me know :)

and besides the ps3 supporting everything you listed,

you said your tv is 1080i, so

you can forget about using Full HD 1080/60p & 24p True Cinema Video Output, that is a 1080p option, that i use on my ps3.

if your tv is 1080i, you probably dont have a 7.1 stereo reciever either, but don't worry the ps3 supports that too.

Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD bitstream out over HDMI (V1.3), i don't think the ps3 supports this in the current release, but i believe it is going to be released shortly. But this is also something that wont help you unless you have a 7.1 reciever with HDMI inputs.

x.v.Color for AVC-HD, yes.

I am going to jump on the PS3 bandwagon here too. I bought it as a bluray player as opposed to a game machine and couldn't be happier. I agree with Nick on all points he has already said but the one about it not looking much better than an upscaled DVD. My TV's native resolution is 720p and Blurays look FAR superior than DVD movies that I've upscaled.

The other thing I really like is the media streaming which Nick touched on. I have a decent collection of music, movies, and tv shows on my computer which I stream wirelessly to my PS3. It's freaking awesome. I am going to be building a small NAS server soon to better support this collection and stream to the PS3.

I see no other reason to buy another player... get a PS3!

hey chevelle,

I ended up getting my parents a home media center using elisa (opensource). I ended up spending 90$ on a blue ray drive and the rest cashed me out at about 270.85$

The price for computer parts is retarded, if you know how to slap something together I think this is your best bet. Nvidia cards are wicked cheap, 30$ for a 8000 series with DVI out x16 PCI express.

HEC makes some sick cases that are smaller than the PS3 and you could make that crap pack a punch.
